Did you know that Sunriver’s stretch of the Deschutes River is included among the less than 1% of U. S. rivers protected as part of the National Wild and Scenic River Rivers system? These protected rivers are being honored this year by the US Postal Service through a sheet of 12 postage stamps that includes a stamp featuring our very own Deschutes! Bureau of Land Management Photographer, Bob Wick, took several of photos depicted on these stamps, including Steelhead Falls on the Deschutes. Join Bob at Dillon Hall in SHARC on May 20th for a presentation that highlights the west’s lesser known conservation areas! Bob will describe these precious areas and talk about how the photos were planned and taken to help participants improve their photography skills. After the presentation, Bob will be available for informal discussions on equipment and techniques.

Bend was selected as the official location for the National Release Ceremony for the stamp series! River enthusiasts, stamp collectors and public officials will gather at Tumalo State Park on May 21st at 11am for the official release ceremony which is open to the public.

The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System was created by Congress in 1968 (Public Law 90-542; 16 U.S.C. 1271 et seq.) to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
