What is a Certified Interpretive Ranger?
The Certified Interpretive Ranger (CIR) course was developed to ensure that US Forest Service staff and volunteers leading tours and talks in the Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests and Crooked River National Grasslands had the necessary training in interpretation to ensure effective delivery of messages to their audience, as well as gaining confidence in leading these programs.

What is the Cost?
Discover Your Forest (DYF) is a non-profit land partner with Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests and Crooked River National Grasslands. The course is free to any US Forest Service employee or volunteer.

What will be covered in CIR?
The Training will be three full days (24 hours total) and will include the following:
• Overview of Interpretation
• Knowing Your Audience
• Knowing Your Resource
• Program Development and Delivery

How do I get my CIR Certification?
Each participant will need to attend all three days of training and pass both an oral and written exam. The oral exam will consist of a 15-minute public program that will be presented to class participants. The presentation will also be videotaped for both future trainings and to allow each participant to evaluate their own presentation after the class. In the end, all participants who pass both the oral and written exam (50 questions/multiple choice/open book), will be awarded an official certification from Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests and Crooked River National Grasslands. Rangers that are currently certified are encouraged to attend/participate in classroom trainings and site visits.

When and where is it offered?
The 2017 course will be offered April 11, 18 and 25 (three full days within a three week period) Classes will be held at the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District Office, Sage/Lupine Conference Room – 63095 Deschutes Market Road, Bend, OR 97701.
