Lava River Cave Tours

Lava River Cave tours are 90 minutes and include learning about the natural history of Lava River Cave while hiking two miles. No hiking or caving experience is necessary, but please be prepared for the cave environment. Participants must come prepared for the cold, in close-toed shoes, and have a flashlight. Flashlight rentals are $5 if necessary. Dogs are not permitted, and children under eight are not permitted. Signature of release and waiver of liability required from each participant prior to entering the cave. Further information will be provided via email upon registration.

White nose syndrome is a threat to the cave’s bat population. You may NOT enter the cave if you have clothing, shoes, backpacks, flashlights/gear etc. that have been worn in any other cave/mine prior to your visit to Lava River Cave. Please make sure all participants are aware of this policy.

The cave is cold (42 degrees) and dark- Everyone entering the cave will be prepared by wearing proper clothing (close-toed shoes/boots, jacket/sweatshirt, long pants), not wearing clothing/shoes/backpacks that have been in ANY other cave, not bringing food/drinks into cave.

Explore Oregon’s longest lava tube during a guided interpretive hike. Explore Lava River Cave with a ranger to learn about how Lava River Cave formed and who calls it home! Tours are 90 minutes and are available on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.; except Fourth of July. Participants must be eight years or older and should dress appropriately for cold weather. Close toed shoes and a flashlight are required. Flashlights are available for a $5 rental fee. A valid recreation pass (America the Beautiful, Northwest Forest Pass or day pass) is needed in addition to your reservation. Passes may be purchased on site.

Lava River Cave descends upon entrance and ascends upon exit 180 stairs. Cave terrain is uneven and may be challenging.

Directions:
From Bend, OR travel south on Highway 97 to Exit 151/Cottonwood Rd. Turn left after exiting and proceed through underpass following signs to Lava River Cave. Cave is about 1 mile down the road on your left.

From La Pine, OR travel north on Highway 97. Take Exit 151/Cottonwood Rd. Turn right after exiting. Continue on road about 1 mile to Lava River Cave on your left. If you miss Exit 151, proceed north to Exit 143 Baker/Knot Rd. and follow southbound directions.
