Current Career Opportunities 2024

Care for the Land Coordinator
The Care for the Land Coordinator organizes cleanup efforts for illegal dumping and litter in the Deschutes National Forest. The coordinator directs and oversees volunteers, contractors, and other groups conducting clean-up operations on public lands.

Compensation: $60,000-$65,000 per year with benefits.
Work Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours/week year-round. Regular schedule is Monday through Friday, with irregular work on weekends, evenings, and holidays to support events.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with US Forest Service personnel and partners to identify clean-up priorities and develop an annual work plan to achieve program goals and objectives.
  • Regularly coordinate with the US Forest Service regarding events, hazmat clean-up, and vehicle removal from forest lands.
  • Communicate with law enforcement and others to ensure clean-up activities are compliant with legal and environmental standards and regulations. Collaborate with the Deschutes National Forest Public Affairs office, develop and provide public messaging, education, and outreach materials related to public land stewardship, Tread Lightly, and Leave No Trace Principles.
  • Develop strategies and tactics to track and monitor cleanup needs.
  • Identify and procure the needed supplies, equipment, and personnel for trash cleanup, including special needs related to hazardous materials and abandoned vehicles.
  • Coordinate with nonprofit organizations and local businesses to procure supplies, equipment, and cleanup personnel.
  • Communicate and work closely with US Forest Service and local law enforcement officers on sensitive issues related to illegal dumping and documentation needs. This includes identifying and reporting abandoned property and illegal encampments on the Forest.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, coordinate, and retain volunteers for various events per the US Forest Service Volunteer Program.
  • Identify new opportunities to partner with federal, state, and local government agencies and nonprofit groups to meet cleanup goals.
  • Assess and respond to safety concerns as they arise and requests assistance from law enforcement or other emergency personnel and public health representatives as appropriate.
  • Provide necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) and supplies for events and cleanups. Maintains First Aid/CPR certification, handling hazardous materials (Hazmat), de-escalation, and other appropriate certifications and training.
  • Coordinate with the US Forest Service and partner organizations in administering contracts for cleanup services for illegal encampments, abandoned vehicles, and large-
    scale dumping and interface with various local government departments and contractors.
  • Maintains appropriate records and prepares required reports and documentation.
  • Lead stewardship and education events promoting accessibility of public lands for all
    user groups.
