Job Description: Wildland Fire Youth Educator
The Wildland Fire Youth Educator will facilitate and oversee Discover Your Forest’s youth wildland fire curriculum and its
implementation. In conjunction with Discover Your Forest and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) staff members,
this position will create a curriculum, run programs, and work with our volunteer force to reach approximately 3,000 of
Central Oregon’s youth annually through in-person field trips, classroom, and experiential learning experiences. This role
supports education programs on public land throughout Deschutes, Crook, and Jefferson counties.

Compensation: $55,000 per year with benefits

Work Schedule: Full Time, 40 hours/week year-round, Monday through Friday, with occasional availability to work
weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Responsibilities Include:
● Develop and implement Next Generation Science Standard aligned 2-12 Wildland Fire Curriculum classroom
lessons and experiential field experiences on public lands.
● Work with the Discover Your Forest Team to set strategic goals and chart the general direction of DYF’s
Education Department.
● Embrace, support, and implement Discover Your Forests continued learning and commitment to our JEDAI
(Justice, Equity, Diversity, Accessibility, and Inclusion) goals and action plan.
● Foster meaningful partnerships with schools, organizations and special groups to further our reach to
underserved communities.
● Lead and coordinate education programs on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and US Forest Service Lands
(USFS)
○ Manage online scheduling system
○ Develop, coordinate and teach pre and post-classroom lessons.
○ Teach and guide students in the field
○ Conduct follow-up evaluations

● Train and lead education volunteers in the field.
○ Assist with coordinating volunteer recruitment and training events for summer and winter programs.
○ Provide feedback and training to volunteers.
○ Coordinate volunteer schedules and fill in volunteer shifts as needed.
○ Manage and problem-solve staff and volunteer coverage for field experiences.
● Coordinate and implement established events with the Bureau of Land Management and other government
agencies.
○ Jr Fire Ranger
○ Young Women’s Wildland Fire Career Camp
○ Confirm and schedule communications with agency specialists and presenters
○ On-site and day-of management at all assigned events
○ Work collaboratively with staff to accomplish event
● Support Discover Your Forest and the Bureau of Land Management staff as needed.
Desired Qualifications, Skills and

Experience:
● Bachelor’s degree in education, natural resources, environmental science or a related field.
● A minimum of two years of experience in formal teaching and/or environmental education.
● Experience in curriculum development and/or lesson planning and familiarity with national and state standards.
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience with public speaking and/ or teaching.
● Ability to plan and deliver education and outreach programs independently and as part of a team.
● Positive attitude, integrity, and ability to adapt.
● Computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
● Ability to work in various outdoor conditions, including rugged terrain and inclement weather.
● Ability to traverse uneven terrain while carrying equipment.
● Ability to maintain a positive and productive rapport with teachers, students, team members, and professional
associates.
● CPR and First Aid certification within three months of employment.
● Must have a valid drivers license at the time of application and during employment.
● The qualified candidate will be required to pass a background check prior to employment.
● Desire to participate in professional development training and opportunities related to fire ecology, wildland
firefighting, trauma-informed care, and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).
